A Philadelphia Story with Julia Press Simmons

Julia Press Simmons is an award winning spoken word artist and playwright. Born and raised in Philadelphia Pa, she achieved critical acclaim with her debut novel Strawberry Mansion: A Philadelphia Story and is now celebrating and promoting her sophomore novel, Begonia Brown.

We were named for the flowers in Grandma's Garden. Begonias, Violets and Daisies, and much like those flowers, we were showered with a love that rivaled sunrays. We knew nothing of pain, or sorrow, or just how cruel the world could be until the day God saw fit to call Grandma home. Her heart stopped two weeks after Daisy was born. My mother smoked us homeless two weeks after that. Now with Grandma gone and mommy on a constant crack high it's up to me to keep our little family together, and you best believe I'll stop at nothing to do just that…

Begonia’s carefree world has been turned upside down. Forced to become the head of her household she has to trade her paintbrush in for a switchblade, and her love of art into a love affair with the hood. Lying, stealing, and turning tricks, Begonia will do any and everything she can to protect her sisters from the ugliness of the world. However, it just isn’t enough… When her younger sister Violet, desperate to escape the hell her life has become is seduced by an up and coming Corner boy, and their baby sister Daisy is riddled with disease that could be fatal if not cared for, Begonia is caught between the hard knocks of the streets and the nightmare of her home life.

From the critically acclaimed author of Strawberry Mansion comes the tale of Begonia Brown. Raised in the unforgiving streets of North Philadelphia, Begonia Brown is undoubtedly a product of her environment, young, ruthless, and criminally minded.

AAH: How would you describe your writing style?
JPS: I am and have always been an outliner (lol) I need to know the who, what, why, and what's going to happen in the end! I find it very hard to write at home, but I will do it when facing a deadline. After my outline is done. I tend to write in burst - taking on big chunks of the project for days at a time and then walking away when the flow is cut off or I get impatient with the story.

AAH: Tell us about your current release.
JPS: Well, Begonia Brown is the second installment of the "Philadelphia Story" series and it was released in October. Begonia Brown was hell to write. It didn't flow out of me like Strawberry Mansion, every word written was a result of some midnight struggle over coffee and borrowed cigarettes. My imagination got the best of me and I had to constantly pull back and make Begonia real. The story is about a young girl who is forced to become the head of her household after her mom's crack addiction spun out of control. It was that simple premise that made Begonia's story so hard. I had plenty of opportunities to make Begonia larger than life, but I wanted her to be real - a representation of the children that I grew up with who faced the same sad circumstances.

AAH: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
JPS: Yes I do. lol WRITE everyday! Push yourself and your craft to the limit- and when it's all said and done and you are sitting with a completed manuscript in your hand - study every book ever written on the publishing industry before you make a decision on what publishing road you will choose!

AAH: What are you reading right now?
JPS: I just Finished "Hold Love Strong," by Matthew Aaron Goodman Hands down the best book I've read this year!

AAH: What can we expect from you in the future?
JPS: A little bit of everything. A blog talk radio show, an ezine on Health and Weight loss,. a documentary on my journey as a self published author, a national tour, and -last but certainly not least- DRAMA! You can always expect heart wrenching tails of life's many trails and tribulations!

AAH: Do you see writing as a career or a hobby?

TN: A career. Once I started my dream there was no point in half way doing it. No one wants to half fulfill a dream. This is who I am. I am a writer and writer is me.

AAH: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

TN: Yeah in third grade when we use to write these short stories. I kept every single piece I have ever written. I was a very imaginative child. I loved to day dream and just create lives in my head. Every since I could understand the Craft of writing it has been in me.

AAH: Can you share a little of your current work with us?

TN: The Ultimate Moment No Regrets is the sequel to my first book. Its is a romantic drama that consists of several lives. I create situations that are realistic in relationships. Such as lying, cheating, uncertainty, and more. In my first book The Ultimate NO NO I wanted to bring realness to a romance book. I never will write a fairy tale.

AAH: What was the hardest part of writing your book?

TN: Starting my second book was hard because it was my first time writing a book in 3 years and this one I knew for sure other people would read. I was just nervous and thinking about the what ifs. I quickly got over that and went back to basics and that's just to have fun with someone Else's life that I created.

AAH: Do you have any advice for other writers?

TN: Yes do a lot of research. No one should be ignorant to a industry they are in. Be smart and know the business.

AAH: How long does it take you to write a book?

TN: About 4-6 weeks. My thing if the book is good to me then I cant put my pen down. Just like if I was reading it I wouldn't be able to put it down. So its the same when I am writing.

Erotic Drama with Junnita Jackson

I was born in Brooklyn, New York in the 70's. Being the oldest I often spent alot of time alone in my room because of inflicting some type of tourture on my youngest brother. During that time I discovered escape through fiction. I remember my mother bringing home stacks of books for me to read, she was an avid reader herself. Among them, my favorite, "Are you there God? It's me Margaret." by Judy Blume. Because of that book I started my own Are you there God? journals. I wonder where they are today. And as I'm typing this I'm considering starting those journals again.

My love for words and expression showed itself publically when I attended Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy. I performed a monologue, to audition for the drama club, from the collection of poems from For Colored Girls Who Consider Suicide When The Rainbow Was Enuf by Ntozake Shange. After my performance I was praised and told I should be on stage, but that wasn't where my heart really was. The reaction to the performance made me want to write and have people entertained by my words and how I strung them together to form images in their minds. I wanted to paint pictures with my words.

I have always been a lover of words. I love the idea of getting lost in a world I created with characters that eventually took on a life of their own. What would they do next? How would they react to this or that? Someone once told me that the characters we (as authors) create are an extension of who we really are; that some things that are unacceptable in society could be held as acceptable in the world of fiction. That was a scary thought. My characters in my debut novel, If It Don't Hurt It Ain't Love, exhibit a variety of personality traits and emotions. They range from the meek to the insane. Is that really who I am?

Currently, I am working on my second novel. I live in Central Pennsylvania with my children and loving, supportive husband. I am blessed.

Kat, Tamia, and Vatyra tear apart and mend the cracks of their tattered hearts. Kat is a sultry and steamy woman with a mind boggling sex addiction. Nothing has ever come between Kat and a good time; but too much of a good time may cost her a trip down the aisle.
Coma stricken, Tamia's sanity hangs on by a thread as she keeps seeing her deceased love, James. Maybe James will let her stay with him instead of sending her back to reality to care for their teenage son.
Although Vatyra's heart has been trampled more than once, she finds the strength to let Kevin back into her heart. Just when she thinks life could be sweet, his ex-freak-of-the-week returns to claim what she believes belongs to her.
